The 84th Academy Awards Winners : Quick Thoughts

If you are a movie buff, you must know that last Monday is the biggest event we’ve been waiting for all year. Happy? I guess, but I’ve predicted the winners in only some major nominations (in my tweets) and only missed just one. Some say that there weren’t much surprises for this year’s Oscar. I’m happy enough to catch most of the show although I didn’t watch it with full concentration (going to check YouTube later for some speeches I skipped).

                         (My Oscar Predictions via twitter)

But overall, I’m happy seeing Christopher Plummer won Best Supporting Actor. He managed to looked great at his age (82 years old! Oh my!). Octavia Spencer seemed to be very much happy with her Best Supporting Actress award. Biggest winners are The Artist; Best Motion Picture, Best Director (Michel Hazanavicius), Best Actor (Jean Dujardin), Best Original Score and Best Costume Design. Hugo won 5 Awards, mostly in Arts and Visual category. I do hope I could see it in the cinema soon! Also happy with A Separation, to get Best Foreign Film Award.

As anticipated, Meryl Streep won Best Actress from her role in Iron Lady and she looked shocked when they read her name. 17 Oscar nominations and 3 win for 62-year-old, please Meryl, anyone who has problems is the one who has a problem!

  1. Well done with your predictions! J Chastain didn’t win , but I think she has a promising future, her over the top attitude+appearence in The Help was so different than Tree of life I could hardly recognize her!
what moments did you enjoy during the oscar show?

My fav parts were clips of stars taking about their first ever movie watched, and what to them makes a great film. Fav on-stage moment for me Emma Stone/Ben stiller(he or tom hanks could easily be host next) Zach G and Will Ferrell were pretty funny, too ( :

    • Agree with Chastain, hope seeing more of her in the future. In ‘The Debt’ she was also changed a lot. Impressive!

I liked the Emma Stone part too. I thought at that moment that she probably be best in comedy rather than drama. I didn’t notice the rest you mention because I didn’t see it in full concentration :( I hope I’ll see it online later. Thanks, Chris!

  2. I’m gonna go on a limb here but I have some thoughts about the acting categories.

As much as I love all of the winners, and I mean all of them, I have a few words about the selections.

Jean Dujardin was truly deserving. He was truly acting. We had to believe in his character, root for him and feel for him, and all the while he had to make it all happen without saying a word. This is what I call a true performance.

Merryl Streep was a bit of a surprise for me on a year full of truly great female performances (where is Tilda Swinton?). Out of the nominees, Viola Davis and Rooney Mara were my favorites. Merryl was part of a film that very few Academy members saw and not many people loved. This makes me believe that it was an award handed out to a career, a wonderful one at that, but not so much to a specific performance, which was great by all accounts, but that did not manage to make the film any better. It does not matter how great an actor is, a performance cannot be awarded if the film did not live up to expectations.

Octavia Spencer did a good work, but come on guys, she did not blow my mind in any way. It was not much of a stretch for her to play a maid being sassy and wise-mouthed and, I repeat, I love Octavia and I thought she was pretty good. Once again, I think the Academy tends to overlook comedic actors, as it was the case with the hilarious Melissa McCarthy in Bridesmaids. However, my favorite, out of the nominees (not to mention those that weren’t even considered), was Berenice Bejo in a very convincing and powerful performance alongside Dujardin.

Last but not least, I can’t really say much about Christopher Plummer’s victory. He is a great actor that has had a great career and all I have heard is good things about the film. I would have been equally happy to have seen Nick Nolte win though.

    • I agree on giving awards on Best Actor/Actress must not leave out how great the movie is. My favorite was Michelle Williams and Berenico was splendid as well, but Meryl stand out from all of them. And I also wished Nolte win, but I guess Plummer radiates more positivity than he did. About Octavia Spencer, I kind of agree with you, since I read the novel and in my mind, her role should’ve been more fierce and hot-blooded. But, she probably earned the Oscar.

      Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
